Social Media Success Lies Just Ahead When You Go Back to the Basics

Are your social media marketing efforts losing steam?  Do you find yourself and your business trying to implement too many new social network features into your social media strategy at the expense of losing touch with your social community and customers?  Maybe it is time to step back, take a deep breath and get back to the basics of social media marketing.  Here are four tips to get your Facebook for business, Twitter account, LinkedIn company page, Pinterest boards or any other social network your brand uses back on track.

Venture into the Crowd

Are you losing touch with your social community because you manage too many social networks and schedule the majority of your social content ahead of time?  Don’t forget to take the time to venture into the crowd, respond directly to comments, thank your fans and followers for shares and retweets, address customer service issues promptly and spend some time checking out what is going on across all your social channels.  Networking of any kind is a two-way street, and there is nothing social about a one-way conversation.

Stop the Horn Blowing

Speaking of a one-way conversation – remember, your Facebook for business fans and Twitter followers don’t want to see a steady stream of posts discussing how great your brand, products or services are day in and day out.  If you’ve found yourself falling into this trap, stop being lazy and start sharing valuable content from other resources related to your business and industry.  Offer value to your social community and stop tooting your own horn!

Visualise Success

If you are using Pinterest and Instagram, obviously this post isn’t targeting your business.  Unfortunately, there are many businesses out there who still rely on text-only posts in their social media strategy.  Photos and videos drive social engagement much better than text and must be a very big slice of your social content pie.

Master Your Mobility

Does your social marketing strategy include a heavy dose of mobile?  While in the past mobile users may not have been included in a discussion on getting back to the basics of social media, but this is no longer the case.  Because mobile users drive social media growth and access social networks more and more with smartphones and tablets, your business must make mobile social media marketing a key part of the foundation of your social media plan.

Remember, it is often the simple, basic, best practices that give your business the best return on investment when it comes to social networking.  Don’t get caught up in all the flashy features and forget to keep the engine tuned up on a regular basis.  What would you add to our four tips?  Please share your ideas in the comments below.
